History of the Aberdeen South Social Group (Updated 05/25)
The Aberdeen South Social Group is comprised of neighbors in the Village of Hemingway who live South of the entrance to Aberdeen Run. This area has 179 homes and the first residents moved arrived in August, 2008.
The Group started with an evening social of about 15 neighbors in one of the homes as a way to get acquainted with new arrivals. At first, a hand written list with e-mails kept us in touch. The list is now the neighborhood directory which has over 160 e-mails and addresses listed. The growth and energy of this lively neighborhood resulted in our web site, www.aberdeensg.com, that lists numerous activities and neighborhood information.
Our regular activities includes a monthly social BYOB every fourth Wednesday at the Colony Recreational Center with a different theme each month (except during the summer). Neighbors sign up, gather a host committee, and put on a party! We’ve celebrated with wine tastings, a Jimmy Buffet Party, an Irish Fling, and an Italian Fest, to name a few. From time to time, an e-mail will come out announcing someone putting a group together to go to the beach, have a cookout, or celebrate a holiday. Spontaneous parties seem to occur out of casual conversations. We now call those Flamingo Flings.
The Group adopted a food pantry and nonperishable food items are brought each month to the Social.
All of our activities are neighborhood-oriented with neighbors volunteering and attending The main purpose still remains getting to know your neighbors and providing ways to enjoy their company.
